Full Descriptionchronicles the daily comings and goings of 30-year-old Poppy, whose positive, easy-going outlook epitomizes the title. Poppy is a primary school teacher, who lives in London with her best friend Zoe (Alexis Zegerman). We follow Poppy through her daily routines--going clubbing with her friends, preparing exercises for her class, going to the chiropractor, and taking flamenco lessons. Nothing truly remarkable happens to Poppy, and yet, her boundless good cheer and childlike delight make her smallest endeavors incredibly engaging. Poppy's smile is put to the ultimate test after she decides to take driving lessons, and is assigned to Scott (Eddie Marsan). Scott is a paranoid, rage-filled instructor who verbally abuses her throughout her lessons. Poppy continues to see him, week after week, despite his escalating tantrums. Meanwhile, at work, a young student has been acting out in class, and Poppy must call in a very handsome social worker for assistance. She and the social worker eventually go on a date, which ends up becoming a catalyst for her driving instructor's climactic meltdown and confrontation with Poppy. The film is a fascinating character study, and Hawkins is excellent as Poppy, striking just the right chord of cheerful without coming off as shrill or obnoxious. It also offers a refreshingly upbeat and realistic look at life for the 30-something urban woman. Poppy lives her life to the fullest--in the real world--without any clichéd SEX AND THE CITY hangups. HAPPY-GO-LUCKY is whip-smart and full of surprises--just when you are certain the story is going to veer in a certain direction, Leigh gently nudges you down a different path. And you are glad of it.

FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS- Dem Brookens Boys is back! After introducing the festival world to the legendary Skunk Ape with their short loosely based on the stinky beast, Matt and Greg Brookens give us their first feature film. If you are unfamiliar with the brothers work, let me assure you that this is a cause for celebration. Written and directed by Matt Brookens and starring brother Greg, this feature length outing is jam packed with genre geek droolworthiness zombies, ninjas, comic books, Lloyd Kaufman talking about sticking drugs up his butt, nerd vengeance and a vicious dark comic streak reminiscent of teen suicide comedy Heathers. The Art of Pain has cult classic written all over it. Jack is an ar-teest. A painter. Well, he would be if he could pick up his paint brush again and get to work. Instead, he s content with his dull gig working at a movie theater along with his aspiring actress girlfriend, Sharon, and his aspiring comic book writer buddy, Nick, played by Greg Brookens. Life is rather pointless and uninspiring hustling popcorn and movie tickets until Marcus is hired at the theater. Marcus is a bad-ass, leather jacket clad ninja in training who is unable to meet his sensei s high expectations, thus keeping him from earning his black belt. Marcus sees himself as a failure, so he devises a fiendish little project, something that he believes he can finally see through. His project is Jack and the lesson he will teach him is that great art comes from great pain. So Marcus commences toying with Jack s life, starting with little things like turning his parents against him and stealing his girlfriend. It s enough to stir the master artist within Jack and he begins painting once again, this new pain inspired work held in the utmost regard and awe by anyone that sees it. But Marcus isn t satisfied. He needs to push this project further. And so things get homicidal. The Art of Pain pushes all the right buttons almost immediately. What really makes you spread your legs so quickly to happily receive this film is that only seconds after meeting the main characters, you like them, really like them and you re instantly sold. Lovably quirky performances are what draw you to these people as does the overall sharp comedic tone of the film that is oftentimes off-beat and unpredictable, but always hilarious so much so that you re still laughing when the film turns dark, violent and brutal. Again, much like Heathers, The Art of Pain blends sociopathic behavior with comedy perfectly in that it never pulls more to one side or the other. Both elements compliment each other and make for an entertainingly uncomfortable watch. With his first feature Matt Brookens has arrived. He clearly understands what it takes to entertain an audience, so if you know what s good for you, you ll let him entertain you someday. Writer/director Joshua Michael Stern (NEVERWAS) tackles American politics in his second feature film. Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner) is just your below-average Joe. He works in an egg factory, likes to knock back a few too many beers, and is a single parent to 12-year old Molly (Madeline Carroll), a bright spitfire who does her best to keep her dad on the straight and narrow. Patriotic Molly insists that apathetic Bud do his civic duty and vote in the upcoming presidential election, a tight race between Republican incumbent Andrew Boone (Kelsey Grammer) and Democratic candidate Donald Greenleaf (Dennis Hopper). Soon the media and both candidates descend upon Bud's hometown of Texico, New Mexico, when it's determined that his vote wasn't counted and will decide the outcome of the entire presidential election. Now that Bud is a "somebody"--there's even a "Bud Cam" capturing his every move--will he be swayed by visits to Air Force One and the "Bud Ball" held in his honor, or will he be the voice of the American people and vote for the better candidate? The lengths the candidates go to in order to win Bud's vote are high points of the film, as they find themselves supporting initiatives that are completely opposed to their platforms at the urging of their campaign managers, played by Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane. Grammer is well cast as Boone, and it's a hoot to see counterculture icon Hopper in this light. Costner makes Bud likable despite the loser stereotype he personifies. But this film belongs to Carroll, a lovely young actress who can steal a scene with one look. If nothing else, SWING VOTE is a reminder that even though politics may be a game, every single vote really does count.

While it might sound outlandish to speak of THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS in the same sentence as CITIZEN KANE, in its own little neck of the cinematic woods the Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen comedy is perhaps just as groundbreaking. In fact, it's nearly impossible to think of another film that blends so seamlessly pitch-perfect stoner babble with high-octane action sequences. Dale Denton (Rogen), a process server with a weed fixation, witnesses a murder and turns to his dealer, Saul (James Franco), for support. The murderer is actually Saul's main drug supplier, and because of Saul's access to some extremely rare high-grade pot (called Pineapple Express) the two are quickly tracked down and put on the run. Like all Apatow/Rogen vehicles, the movie deals with the theme of men succumbing to adulthood and all the adjustments they are forced to make in the process. However, unlike KNOCKED UP and THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is just too wacky to offer any lessons. Still, there's more going on here than giggles and the munchies. Indie director David Gordon Green (SNOW ANGELS) brings a subtle auteur's touch to the proceedings, approaching the smoking scenes with his distinctively loose feel and giving the action sequences a wonderfully dated sheen that makes them look more like a fight from KNIGHT RIDER than the empty flash of 21st-century blow-‘em-ups. It is Franco, however, who truly steals this movie--he hasn't been this charming since his days on FREAKS AND GEEKS. There's only so many ways to play a stoner, but Franco puts his own endearing, lovable spin on the type, portraying Saul as a kind-hearted, well-intentioned yet hardcore dope smoker. Rogen and Apatow have proven themselves a nearly unstoppable juggernaut; here's hoping they bring Franco along on the ride a little more often.
